The Steam Deck is once again proving just how strong demand remains in Japan. A recent restock through Komodo, Valve’s official distributor in the region, sold out in less than two hours, according to an official update shared via social media.
This isn’t an isolated case. Availability of the handheld has been highly inconsistent throughout 2026, with stock appearing briefly before disappearing almost immediately. Japan, along with other Asian markets, has been particularly affected by these rapid sell-outs.
A recurring problem in Japan
Komodo handles Steam Deck distribution across Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and Hong Kong, making it the primary source for official units in the region. However, supply has struggled to keep up with demand, leading to repeated scenarios where restocks vanish within hours—or even minutes.
Previous restocks have followed the same pattern, with strong interest quickly overwhelming available inventory. This has created a cycle where users must act fast or risk missing out entirely.
Why Steam Deck keeps selling out
Several factors explain why the Steam Deck continues to disappear from shelves so quickly:
Global component shortages: The ongoing memory and storage chip crisis—driven largely by AI industry demand—has reduced supply for consumer hardware, including the Steam Deck. Limited production scale: Valve operates on a smaller hardware scale compared to major manufacturers, making it harder to maintain consistent global stock.
Discontinuation of LCD models: With older models phased out, the OLED version is now the primary option, increasing pressure on supply.
Rising demand in Asia: Japan remains one of the most enthusiastic markets for portable gaming, further intensifying competition for units.
